WITCHES of SCOTLAND is a campaign dedicated to seeking justice for the nearly 4,000 individuals, predominantly women, who were accused of witchcraft in Scotland between 1563 and 1736.

Founded on International Women’s Day 2020 by advocate Claire Mitchell KC and writer Zoe Venditozzi, the campaign has three primary objectives: securing a legal pardon for those convicted, obtaining a formal apology from the Scottish government, and establishing a national memorial to honour the victims.

In a significant milestone, on International Women’s Day 2022, then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon issued a formal apology  acknowledging the egregious historic injustice suffered by those accused of witchcraft.

Additionally, in February 2025, the WITCHES OF SCOTLAND TARTAN was officially registered.

 This tartan serves as a living memorial, with its design elements symbolizing various aspects of the witch trials and the campaign’s goals.

Every thread in the Witches of Scotland tartan tells a story. From its powerful symbolism to the way it’s crafted and cared for, this tartan is more than cloth — it’s a memorial, a statement, and a commitment to a better way of making and wearing textiles.

The Meaning in the Weave

Designed as the first tartan to honour the victims of Scotland’s historic witch trials, each colour and thread has been carefully chosen for its symbolic weight:

 Black and grey represent the dark times and the ashes of those who were persecuted.

• Pink and red signify the legal tape that bound the fate of the accused — and reminds us of the systems that still need challenging.
• The white check is formed of three threads, standing for the campaign’s three aims: Pardon. Apology. Memorial.
• A large black section of 173 threads marks the 173 years during which the Witchcraft Act was in force (from 1563 to 1736) — both years are included in the thread count itself.

This tartan was officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans in February 2025, and is protected by trademark. When you wear it, you wear remembrance.

This base isa lovely fingering weight , makes for fabulous cozy socks , extra squishy and delightful next to the skin

This yarn is hand dyed in individual batches with professional acid dyes in a smoke-free, dog friendly environment. Each skein will be unique due to the nature of the dye process.....saturation of color may vary. Colors may be more or less dominant than shown in product photos. This colorway will knit up sone what variegated.

This yarn is machine washable, I recommend hand-washing and layimg flat to dry, this will increase the product’s life .

Wash separately, as minimal color bleeding may occur during the first few washes.
